Minimally invasive surgery uses small incisions and specialized tools which allow tissue to be moved out of the way rather that cut as with traditional surgery. The surgeon may utilize a microscope for better visualization through a small incision. Fluoroscopy may be used to guide placement of instrumentation percutaneously without making large incisions.
Some common types of minimally invasive spine surgery include:
• 1 or 2 level cervical and lumbar fusion
• Herniated disc repair
• Surgery to repair or stabilize compression fractures of the vertebrae
